Het zou Ted Russell Kamp zijn eerste tour worden in Europa als singer-songwriter, uiteraard hadden we hem al bezig gezien als bassist bij Shooter Jennings zonder te weten toen dat we hem nog eens zouden tegen komen...

Na een mailtje van Ted zelf of we niet eens zouden af komen naar een optreden als singer-songwriter konden we natuurlijk niet weigeren ook al omdat Ted zelf de vriendelijkheid in eigen persoon is. We zouden elkaar ontmoeten voor het concert in Toogenblik te Haren want achteraf zijn er altijd wel fans die een praatje willen  maken met de artiest.

Van ijs was er alleen buiten sprake door de winterse omstandigheden maar zeker niet in de persoon van Ted. Voor hem was het ook wel koud na al 10 jaar te leven in het zonnige Los Angeles. We vertelden dat bij Rootsville het niet gaat om een interview af te nemen waardoor er antwoorden ontstaan die ook in een bio van de artiest af te lezen zijn dus kwamen we maar onmiddellijk tot de essentie van de avond…de muziek en de optredens.

Ik vertelde hem dat ikzelf niet als het grote licht mocht beschouwd worden in de singer-songwereld maar me meer concentreerde tot blues, jazz en soul maar laat dit nu ook 3 strekkingen zijn waarvan Ted zelf een groot liefhebber is…

TRK: Ja, blues, jazz en zeker soul zijn muziekgenres die me erg bevallen. Zowel blues als oude soul zijn steeds weer wel terug te vinden in sommige van mijn nummers.Yes, I like the Stax period but also the Motown artists…Soul is the finest music, iets wat ik als Stax liefhebber alleen maar kan beamen.Trouwens op mijn album 'NorthSouth' uit 2005 staat een nummer met als titel 'Blue Eyed Soul'. Dit nummer probber ik vanavond ook te brengen en gaat over mensen zoals Joe Cocker en TJ White en later ook een Robert Palmer, mensen die als voorbeelden kunnen gesteld worden voor 'Blue Eyed Soul', maar toch is de meeste van mijn muziek 'Roots music infected' maar probeer ik zowel een beetje blues als soul in mijn optredens te verweven.

Ted, ikzelf heb in mijn jeugd wel de Stax periode kunnen volgen maar jij…

TRK: ja, ik ben uiteraard jonger maar als muziekant komt goede muziek wel naar je toe en het spelen van ‘black music’ begint meer en meer een deel van mijn leven uit te maken, een gevoel dat ik ook steeds meer en meer in mijn eigen albums probeer te brengen.

Bij Shooter Jennings kennen we je uiteraard alleen als bassist..

TRK: Ja, live speel ik bij Shooter Jennings  op de basgitaar met occasioneel ook al wel eens de harmonica en op de trompet kan ook al wel eens gebeuren maar tijdens de CD opnames zijn zowat alle instrumenten voor mijn rekening. Ik speelde al in een verschillende bands met verschillende instrumenten.

Ik zie dat je zelf nu een mandoline bij je hebt…

TRK: Ja , gitaar en de mandoline behoren tot de werkinstrumenten die ik bij me heb voor deze akoestische tour. Uiteraard heb ik bij me thuis nog wel betere maar zoals iedere artiest die op tour gaat probeer ik dat het budget me niet te erg zou treffen bij eventueel verlies iets wat de meeste artisten wel doen.

Wanneer je op tour bent met een band heb je natuurlijk de andere leden  om met te praten maar alleen als singer-songwriter moet het soms wel eenzaam zijn.

TRK: Jazeker, want ik mis altijd wel mijn vrouw en dochtertje die ik steeds weer moet achterlaten maar uiteraard is het ‘on the road’ gaan mijn job en het is natuurlijk waar mijn inkomsten vandaan komen en we moeten eten ook, maar ik hou wel van Europa en zeker omdat een beetje van mijn ‘roots’ in Nederland liggen…

Hoezo?

TRK: Mijn vader is zijn Roots liggen in Nederland…en specifiek Den Bosch is de buurt vanwaar mijn vader afkomstig is…en het is dan ook een beetje als thuis zijn en mijn band met landen als België en Nederland is natuurlijk intenser dan bij de meeste van Amerikaanse muziekanten en ikzelf hou heel veel van de Europeanen. Ik woonde ook een tijdje in Seattle waar veel Scandinavisch natives hun stek hebben kunnen vinden.

Ja, dan zal je uiteraard wel een band hebben met Nederland en het alleen zijn voelt dan wel een beetje minder pijnlijk. Het wordt tijd om je te gaan opmaken voor je concert en achteraf zullen we wel nog even bijpraten…bedankt.

Divisadero (2006)

Divisadero is one Ted's two brand new albums for 2006. Most of this record was written and recorded in hotel rooms, buses, studios, and living rooms while Ted toured the U.S. with Shooter Jennings through 2005. Named after the street that used to be the border between San Francisco and the 'country', this album features songs about divisions and change. It deals with the tensions and borderlines in life: between the insider and the outsider, the city and the country, the mature vs. the immature, being in love vs. yearning for love, what you want to be vs. who you are. Screwing up and trying to fix it. Dreaming and Dealing. The record features duets with special guests JESSI COLTER and SHOOTER JENNINGS. The band is mostly the same crew that's on NorthSouth: with the addition of Brian Whelan on guitar, harmony vocals, and Wurlitzer,Avi Sills on drums, Tony Paoletta on steel, Michael Webb on Hammond organ, and Gina Villalobos singing harmony. Nashville Fine Line (2006)

Nashville Fine Line is one Ted's 2 brand new records for 2006. Most of these songs were written and recorded on the road while Ted's was out traveling and playing bass with Shooter Jennings - on tour buses, in hotel rooms, in random studios around the country, and at home in Ted's living room. Most of the songs were written with Nashville co-writers, so a lot of these might sound a little closer to 'mainstream country' than Ted's other records: a little more fun, a little more sentimental. It's all part of the experiment and challenge of Music Row and Nashville: walking the fine line of writing in ways that are accessible and commercial, but also have depth, and heart and soul. A lot of the co-writers are very well respected and have written numerous hits for many different artists. They have all walked the line Ted is walking here, and they've all become good friends. NorthSouth (2005)

NorthSouth combines Ted's love of American roots music with modern Americana and '70's rock sensibilities. The classic production style and and honest storytelling aproach to songwriting has made this a critically acclaimed album. The CD includes Ted's version of the song "Steady At The Wheel", which is also on the Shooter Jennings album "Put The O Back In Country". The band featured on the album is mostly members of "Union Pacific", Ted's band that played all over L.A. through 2004 and 2005: Eugene Edwards on guitar, Eric Heywood on pedal steel, Leroy Powell on guitar, Robin Wiley singing harmonies, and Mike Sessa on drums. The disc also features special guest appearances from many of the other musicians and band leaders Ted played with in L.A: Preston Smith, Jonny Kaplan, Rob Bonfiglio, Bart Ryan, Jimmy Khoury, Corey Gash, and Shooter Jennings.(source: TRK website)

Dedications (1996)

Dedications was Ted's first record: an all instrumental jazz album. Ted recorded it at the ripe old age of 24 when he was playing jazz for a living (just as he was discovering roots music). This record is an homage to the American jazz and blues of the '50's and '60's. Inspired by Bill Evans, Gerry Mulligan, and 'Kind of Blue' era Miles Davis, this CD is comprised mostly of original compositions, but also has a few standards arranged by Ted. The band is comprised of many of the most respected younger professional jazz players in Seattle: Gary Fukushima on piano, Rob Davis on tenor sax, Mark Taylor on alto sax, Steve Korn and Mark Yeend on drums.(source: TRK website)
